Disability Awareness and Disability Equality, what’s the difference?

In the past training around disabled people has focused very much on the medical issues associated with various impairments; disability has been seen as an individual’s medical problem.

Andrew Hubbard Associates delivers training that has equality of opportunity as its foundation. All training and consultancy is based upon an equal opportunities framework.

Andrew Hubbard Associates moves away from the medical point of view of disability, known as the Medical Model; disability is not seen as a problem.

Equality training does not use simulation exercises. These are exercises where participants are asked to wear a blindfold or sit in a wheelchair in order to experience what it is like to be disabled. This is insulting to disabled people.

Disability Equality Training looks at the common things in everyday lives that disable people. It looks at lack of access and barriers that create the disability. This point of view is known as the Social Model of Disability.

Disability equality Training is delivered by disabled people, whereas awareness training is often delivered by non-disabled people.

Equality training sees disability as an equal opportunities issue which includes awareness training.
